The series follows monster hunter Erica Slaughter, who can see monsters that adults can’t. As Something Is Killing the Children kicks off, she heads to Archer’s Peak, Wisconsin, where frightening creatures are devouring the small town’s children. The comics have sold over five million copies globally and won multiple Eisner Awards since launch.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Blumhouse picked up the rights to Something Is Killing the Children after a bidding war that also involved companies like Lionsgate and Netflix. Netflix was originally slated to adapt the series for TV, with The Haunting of Hill House‘s Mike Flanagan and Tracy Major attached. After they stepped away, Dark showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese were set to develop the series. However, Netflix passed on the project in late 2024.

With Something Is Killing the Children, Blumhouse looks to continue its hot streak of horror adaptations. Its 2021 adaptation of Joe Hill’s 2004 short story The Black Phone was a box office success, while its adaptation of the smash video game Five Nights at Freddy‘s became its highest-grossing movie yet.
